Film Companion has created a unique e-learning course with the aim to provide hands-on, interactive learning to bridge the gap between academics and the industry. Each module will be taught by celebrated working professionals from the industry. Drawing form their own experience and using examples from their work they will showcase the practical application of the various disciplines and aspects that cover filmmaking.

Course 1: Writing About Films

We kick off this programme with our first module on ‘Film Criticism’. This unique module brings together for the first time professional critics who will breakdown their job and give the students an in-depth look into what is film criticism. With the best film critics from the industry, Anupama Chopra , Baradwaj Rangan , Rahul Desai and Sucharita Tyagi, we cover a total of 10 topics under the umbrella of Film Criticism.

From ‘Who is a film critic’ to ’How to review a film’, the 4 critics give their unique perspectives and insights from their own experiences. With each critic discussing and breaking down their movie watching and writing process, by the end of the module the students will be equipped with practical knowledge to enrich their movie watching experience and the ins and out of being a professional film critic.

About the Instructors

Anupama Chopra

Anupama Chopra is a film critic, television anchor and book author. She has been writing about Bollywood since 1993. Her work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Hindustan Times, The Los Angeles Times and Vogue (India).

Baradwaj Rangan

Baradwaj Rangan is a National Award-winning film critic. He has authored Conversations with Mani Ratnam and Dispatches From the Wall Corner. His long-form story on Vikram was featured in The Caravan Book of Profiles, as one of their “twelve definitive profiles.”

Rahul Desai

A film critic (formerly of Mumbai Mirror, Catch News) and columnist (The Hindu), Rahul Desai writes about everything cinematic under Mumbai's hot sun, including short films, web shows and desi B-movies.

Sucharita Tyagi

Sucharita has been a prime time Radio Jockey, emcee, interviewer, voice over artist, writer and an overall pretty neat person. Her favorite things in the world are watching films and educating YouTube trolls in gender equality (among other lessons).
